Advent Joy

Advent 2 : Joy
Catherine Heilbronn

“A burst of laughter with friends!
A warm fuzzy feeling at seeing my children do something well.
The excitement of getting a new pair of running shoes.”

If you asked me summarise ‘joy’, here’s what I’d point to! They are moments that are real and often beautiful, but sometimes they also feel a bit brief.

I’m not sure whether anyone would describe me as a joyful person, yet I constantly seek it in the ordinary of my life, that so often for me, feels confusing, hard, and overwhelming. Advent is a reminder to me that real joy often appears in hidden places, quietly growing where we least expect it, not where it is shouting out for our attention.

I’ve been listening to a beautiful song that Pete Wheeler has released. It’s called, ‘One Quiet Moment’ (links at the bottom of the page). As I listened, I was struck by all the emotions woven through it – where, at first, I didn’t see joy at all. There’s the weariness of Mary and Joseph after such a long journey, and the uncertainty of not fully knowing what God was doing or what their lives were about to become. I felt the fear in Joseph almost walking away, and the sorrow of realising their baby had come with a holy purpose that would one day lead Him toward sacrifice.

There’s also a deep sense of trust, as they choose to accept their place in God’s plan, even with so many unanswered questions. And in the middle of all this, there’s wonder and awe, especially when heaven breaks into their quiet night with the voices of angels. And finally, in that same quiet moment, as Mary carried Jesus in her womb, there it is – you see the joy that is steady and deep, rooted in God’s presence and the unfolding of His plan..

This moment in the song reminds me of the angel’s message:

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:10–11)

Mary and Joseph’s ‘one quiet moment’ on that starry night shows that joy is often found in the ordinary and in the waiting. Their journey held both joy and pain, but when they paused and trusted God, allowing His presence to fill them, joy found its way to them. Mary’s own words capture it perfectly: ‘and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.’ (Luke 1:47). Her joy came from trusting that God was close.

And finally, heaven’s voice reminds us that this joy is not just for them – it is for all of us!

The angels sing, proclaiming that God’s salvation is near. God meets us in our own quiet moments, just as He met them. We don’t have to have it all together to feel joy.

And in the end (or the beginning!) the greatest reason for our joy is the good news itself: Jesus is coming, and God’s salvation is near for us and for the whole world.

This Advent take a moment to listen to ‘One Quiet Moment’ and let its truth meet you, wherever you are. Why not share its truth and good news with family and friends.
Let’s pray:

Lord, open our hearts to Your presence, that we may recognise the quiet joy You are planting in us this Advent.  Amen’
